Last night was supposed to get down to 30 degrees between midnight and 8 AM. After debating covering plants and crossing my fingers, I decided instead to harvest everything I could. Between a business trip last Wednesday and Saturday, and the sudden need to harvest everything to save it from the freeze, there was a [...]

I usually try to post all original content here, but when one of my favorite comics posted something Gardening related, I couldn’t resist. Wondermark Gives Gardening Suggestions Wondermark is a quirky fun comic made by David I-spell-my-name-with-an-exclamation-point Malki!. His comics are made by massaging old illustrations to fit new storylines. It’s nearly always amusing, frequently [...]

I have finally placed my seed orders for this year. I was planning on not waiting this long, but we were out of town a couple of times and so, here it is March already. We will still be adding a couple of things to this order. My 5 year old is extremely excited for [...]

I can’t believe I never posted these pictures. These are from our first batch of ripe tomatoes last summer. You can see the 9 jars of canned whole tomatoes, and the three tubs of tomatoes ready for making into sauce.

This was pretty simple, but very very good. It’s just roasted squash, zucchini and veggies with spices, and it really lets the vegetable’s flavor come through. Recipe Veggies 2 small zucchini 2 small yellow summer squash 1 cup portobello mushrooms 1 large red bell pepper Sauce 1/4 cup sesame seeds Enough olive oil to float [...]

The garden is tapering off. There are still some tomatoes on the dry-leaved vines, but they’re not as sweet and juicy as the summer ones. These ones taste more pasty, more like store bought ones. A dozen small late blooming squash and a handfull of beans will still get eaten, and there’s enough spinach for [...]

Yes, we’re still eating summer squash. We are down to the last couple of summer squashes. These toast pizzas were good, and fast. Spaghetti sauce from a can with spinach, tomatoes, squash, banana peppers, jalapenos and cheese on top. The bread we used was fairly dense, and helped keep the sauce on top. I don’t [...]

I made two squash related mistakes this year. I only planted them about 18 inches apart, and I forgot to label them. The results of these decisions led to a glut of summer squash as I thinned what I now assume were the smaller, slower growing winter squash plants. Some winter squash did survive the [...]

Here’s a real life example of an basic Brazilian lunch, even though we had it for dinner this time around. This is something pretty typical, which I would have eaten on any given day with my host family as an exchange student or at meals with church members when I was a missionary. The only [...]

Squash time again! The garden has been producing beans and peas like crazy. We have been able to keep up so far, but posting here has lagged with the work I’ve been doing. This post comes courtesy of a Denver to Salt Lake City flight. I’m headed out to Utah to meet my new boss, [...]
